Bloodline Series
As a black person, I can only trace my family tree back to two or three generations that I know of. I started wondering who I am related to and this body of work is my exploration of this. I thought about the duality of my history - African and British linages. My African ancestors likely came from West Africa and the British side exists because Jamaica, where I live, was once a part of the British Empire during the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Colonialisation. As I made these works, I thought about how I have to construct memory rather than recall it because there is so much I do not know. There are so many gaps in my personal history. I also thought about secrets and the idea that some of these will remain buried or unknown to me. Most of the pieces are portraits with symbolic images of furniture and body parts seeking to piece together parts of my story.
